NITRIDING

Nitriding is a heat treating process that diffuses nitrogen into the surface of a metal to create a case-hardened surface. These processes are most commonly used on low-carbon, low-alloy steels.

They are also used on medium and high-carbon steels, titanium, aluminium and molybdenum. Salt Bath Nitriding/ Ferritic Nitrocarburizing (less than 723℃) is a diffusion process mainly catered to steels and has a more uniform case depth of nitride layer, nascent nitrogen and carbon atoms diffuse into steel from the salt that reacts with the steel substrate by thermochemical reaction.

The process is carried out at about 550 to 575℃, treating component quicker than gas nitriding. The absorption of Nitrogen by steel is greater in the ferritic region than austenitic one hence distortion of components is minimised. appearance and enhanced corrosion resistance (par to chrome plating).

Salt Bath Liquid Nitriding common within the automobile, tool & die industry oil & gas industry for valves and related components. Materials include mild steels, carbon steels, tool steels (A2, D2, M2, H13), and stainless steels (303, 304, 316).
A chemical oxidation treatment after nitriding combined with polishing produces coatings with exceptional black.
